OVERVIEW
YouThru is a system realized for the immediate creation, sending, tracking and collection of feedback of multimedia messages (text + audio-video recordings + attachments) of which YouThru even gives you a semantic value thanks to the possibility of articulating audiovisual elements in thematic sections, each characterized by its own bookmark.
YouThru also allows for the publication of the audiovisual element on a web site or blog in that it provides a script relative to each message created to embed in the code of the desired page.
YouThru pays attention to many contexts of use and many verticalizations, among which it is, in the final phase, a direct administration service, in the collecting and valuation (also in teams) of multimedia CVs.
The Context in which it was created
The growth of the technologies and services of multimedia on the web stimulated us regarding the possibility of creating an application which would allow users to create and manage audiovisual messages, or multimedia communication in general, with extreme immediateness and simplicity, also for professional aims and contexts.
We, therefore, ascertained that among the few existing services (for how famous they are), many did not include the possibility of realizing videos, but only of publishing those already made, leaving the moment of the realization to a specific tool of video editing in local, perhaps professional and complex, with consequent loss of the immediateness and the simplicity on the part of the user.
Even the insertion of a semantic value in the videos, or the subdivision into thematic sections, is in these cases exclusive to expert users equipped with the appropriate software. The few services which in some way also allowed for the creation of audiovisual messages usually did not manage the thematic articulation, and furthermore did not include the subsequent management of created messages, such as tracking and the collection of feedback.
The centrality of the audiovisual, in other words, often resulted absolute and the use limited to the publication. With YouThru we thought that also the management of multimedia messages, following their creation, was an aspect which users wanted and which should, therefore, be included in the service.
And so it is like that, that YouThru also takes care of the sending, the generation of the publication code, the tracking and the collection of feedback relative to each multimedia message created.
Technological choices
YouThru is an example of the convergence and collaboration of different technologies which blend together to increase the user experience of the application. The multimedia component represents the heart of the service which through the use of the Flash Media Server 2 is able to record a video of good quality with a reduced band consummation from a common webcam installed on the client.
In this context, Flex technology is used for the definition of the user interface of the web application which permits for all the operations of recording of every single bookmark or chapter, without the necessity of reloading the page.
In YouThru you will also find space for AJAX which has been skilfully used to accelerate and render less painful the phase of recording and of inserting of data for the creation of the structure of our video interview. A series of controls and validations, all operating on the client’s side, allow you to have feedback coming from the server in real time, without de-contextualizing the screen in question.
An engine developed in Javascript allows for a bidirectional communication for the passage of data, errors and information of every nature (a technique dictated by script bridging), to every single function realized with different technologies. It is with this approach that the AJAX pages of YouThru communicate with the Flex interface or with the Flash Media Serve.
