OVERVIEW

MobyMobile is an innovative technological solution which allows for the distribution and the fruition, on the move, of editorial contents of various genres through mobile phones, including images and films, which MobyMobile can deliver with high levels of quality and interactivity.

MobyMobile gives a particular format to contents and reduces the weight in KB and the download time; the cost for the user is notably contained and his satisfaction will be at maximum.

MobyMobile for RCS Mobile, personalized version for RCS, distributes the contents of Corriere della Sera and the Gazzetta dello Sport and is downloadable from the sito http://rcsmobile.corriere.it/.

The Context in which it was created

The diffusion of mobile data connections with the relative reduction in the connection costs and the appearance of the flat rate, the evolution of the expectations and the requirements of users and the evident limits of the model based on the sending of SMS/MMS have constituted the push which has driven Comtaste to undertake the conception and creation of MobyMobile.

RCS Media Group, the first Italian editorial group (Corriere della Sera, Gazzetta dello Sport), and in particular the Digital/Mobile division, gave an important impulse to the start-up of the project providing a precious contribution to the planning of the interface and some features of the application.

Technological choices

The MobyMobile solution includes a platform server realized in PHP 5 and a client mobile realized in J2ME (Java Micro Edition) and Flash Lite.

The micro architecture server, written in PHP 5, guarantees maximum portability both on Windows and Linux systems. Through the use of web services it is capable of connecting to any remote data source without having to install anything on the server of the client and maintaining the connection and transmission of data from the server secure. Furthermore, the PHP engine takes care of optimizing the flow of information to be sent to the mobile device. This is done to reduce to minimum terms the quantity of bytes (and, therefore, the costs for the final user) which are sent at each request from the application which is running on the mobile (client).

The client in Java, uses the runtime J2ME (http://java.sun.com/javame/index.jsp), Java Micro Edition (also known as Java ME or J2ME), for the development of a software dedicated to mobile devices such as mobiles and PDA and similar.

The choice in the use of J2ME was made to render the application compatible for a wide range of devices. MobyMobile can in fact be installed on more than 400 different models of mobile phones.

The version in Flash Lite uses the profile of the Flash Player optimized for mobile devices. This choice has the ability to increase the user experience of the user in the fruition of contents and the features of MobyMobile, rendering the use of the software even more engaging.

Features

The client of MobyMobile interacts with the server part of the system (the mobile Content Management System) which in turn interrogates applications and centralized data sources, for example the same which “feed” a web site, and represent in this a typical case of modern convergence between the web and the world of mobile devices.

All the contents which you desire can be downloaded on to the mobile phone in a single operation, and then used subsequently by the user in a condition of absence of connection.

The mobile Content Management System is furthermore capable of optimizing and delivering the contents directly through the mobile browser installed on the phones.

It is compatible with more than 400 models of mobile phones and is, therefore, capable of covering most of the mobiles currently in circulation.

It allows you to manage messages of response from the server (information to users, activation/deactivation of the service, changes in interface and transitions) in a dynamic way.
